    GSHP Alternative

Surface Thermal: The Category Alternative to Ground Source

Surface thermal energy is not merely a variation of ground source heating; it is a purpose-designed alternative category that eliminates the primary constraints of traditional vertical infrastructure. No drilling. No outdoor units.

Surface Thermal is ideal for properties where deep drilling is impractical, restricted, or too expensive , particularly listed buildings, urban sites, and established gardens.

The Challenges with Traditional Ground Source Heat Pumps

While ground source heat pumps are highly efficient, traditional systems come with significant barriers that make them unsuitable for many UK properties.

    Expensive Borehole Drilling

Traditional GSHP systems require boreholes 75-200m deep, costing £15,000-£30,000+ just for drilling, before any other installation costs.

    Large Land Requirements

Horizontal ground loops need 2-3 times the property's floor area. Most UK homes simply don't have enough garden space.

    Planning Complexity

Deep drilling often requires geological surveys, planning permission, and can be restricted in conservation areas or near water sources.

    Property Disruption

Installation causes significant disruption to gardens and landscaping, with heavy drilling rigs and excavation equipment required.

    The Teratherm Surface Thermal Alternative

Same renewable heating benefits. No boreholes. No disruption. Uses the surfaces you already have.

    No Boreholes Required

Our surface technology captures thermal energy at just 50mm depth, providing renewable heating without drilling.

    Uses Existing Surfaces

Integrates into driveways, patios, and hardstanding you already have or were planning.

    No outdoor unit

A Learn about invisible heating . No noise, no visual impact on your property.

    Lower Planning Burden

Surface installation avoids the complexity of deep drilling permissions.

    How It Works

Teratherm captures thermal energy from three sources: solar radiation absorbed by the surface, ambient air temperature, and stable ground heat. All at just 50mm depth.

The system integrates invisibly into resin-bound driveways, patios, pool surrounds, and other hardstanding areas. A bespoke heat pump then converts this low-grade heat into high-grade energy for underfloor heating, radiators, and hot water.

    Ideal For Your Property

Teratherm Surface Thermal works for a wide range of property types and project scenarios.

    Homes Without Garden Space

Urban and suburban properties with limited outdoor space can utilise driveways and patios instead of large gardens.

    Renovations & Retrofits

Perfect for retrofit projects where you're already updating hardstanding areas or replacing an old heating system.

    New Builds

Integrate renewable heating from day one, with the collector system installed as part of your driveway or patio construction.

    Driveway & Patio Upgrades

If you're already planning to replace your driveway or patio, add invisible renewable heating at the same time.

    Performance & Output

Reliable, efficient renewable heating designed for UK conditions.

    Low Temperature Heating Compatibility

Teratherm works optimally with low temperature heating systems such as underfloor heating, which operates at 35-45°C. The system can also support radiator circuits and domestic hot water. For best efficiency, we recommend pairing with underfloor heating in new builds and retrofits where possible.

Why Boreholes are the Limiting Factor for GSHP.

For most projects, boreholes are the limiting factor, whether due to cost, access, geology, or permissions. Deep drilling often rules out traditional GSHP for urban and suburban homes where site access is restricted.

    • Deep boreholes require specialist drilling equipment and geological surveys
    • Site access often rules out traditional GSHP for urban and suburban homes
    • When boreholes fail, Surface Thermal is the alternative class of ground source heating

When Teratherm Is the Right Fit

    • • Properties with hardstanding (driveways, patios, courtyards)
    • • Sites where boreholes are impractical or too expensive
    • • Listed buildings or conservation areas with planning constraints
    • • Noise-sensitive locations where outdoor units are undesirable
    • • Renovation projects already upgrading external surfaces

When Teratherm May Not Be Ideal

    • • Properties without any hardstanding planned
    • • Sites requiring very high thermal output without sufficient surface area
    • • Properties with no access for surface preparation
    • • Extremely remote locations without installer coverage
